Our Australian Genmaicha is made with sencha grown in the Victorian Alpine region. The Sencha is produced by traditional Japanese processing techniques and is blended locally with Japanese roasted brown rice.
Genmaicha is commonly known as popcorn tea, as the rice can sometimes pop during roasting, resembling popcorn.
Victoria’s Alpine region provides ideal growing conditions for tea. The climate, temperature and environment are similar to that of Japan’s tea growing region.
The camellia siniensis tea plant is not native to the region, so pests and bacteria are less likely to be attracted to tea plantations. This means little to no pesticides are required to treat the plants, retaining a high level of purity.
Genmaicha originated in Kyoto, Japan in the 15th century. It became popular with those who could not afford the luxury of green tea, which was very expensive. The brown rice (Genmai) was added to the tea (cha) as a filler to make the tea go further and last longer, lowering its value and making it more affordable and accessible to “the people”.
